When Mohammad Aslami left his native Afghanistan to escape the Soviet occupation, he packed his hopes, dreams and self-confidence and set out on a journey to pursue the American dream. The road to freedom and success is often marked by challenges and mileposts, something Mohammad realized as he deplaned at JFK International airport. Although he had studied the English language, he could not understand a word the first gentleman he spoke with said.
Nearly twenty years have flown by since Mohammad’s arrival in the United States, and in that time, he has not only mastered the English language but also the lofty career aspirations he set for himself. He presently is a Senior Process Engineer at Seagate Technologies, and he has recently completed his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from American InterContinental University Online.
Though educated when he arrived in America, Mohammad realized early on that his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Kabul University would not instill a high degree of confidence or respect from demanding U.S. employers. Rather, he accepted jobs for which he was overqualified and set out to prove himself through dedication, hard work and industriousness. After a year of seemingly endless paperwork and verbal examinations, Mohammad earned respect…and a promotion to Engineer.
“That is what is great about this country, if you want something bad enough and are willing to work for it, nearly anything can happen.”
Mohammad’s hard work as an engineer continued to pay off and twice earned him recognition as Top Notch Talent for his having been an outstanding team member as well as a premiere individual contributor.
While at Seagate, he has invented two new ways to test the quality of computer components. Mohammad’s methods are faster, safer and less expensive than other methods, and the U.S. Patent Office has granted patents on both.
At a point in a career where many might choose to rest on their laurels, Mohammad Aslami instead continued to challenge himself by advancing his education even further. Now the proud recipient of an MBA, he shares his unbridled enthusiasm for a future yet unseen. “With an MBA, the possibilities are endless. You can be whatever you want. Although, since I wasn't born here I can’t be president; but nearly everything else is wide open!”
And as if one advanced degree isn’t enough, Mohammad is just five courses shy of finishing his Master’s in Electrical Engineering; another feather in his cap and another means by which to achieve his loftiest goals.
Mohammad Aslami enjoys the good life he shares with his wife and three children. They take full advantage of the skiing, hiking and biking afforded them by their home at the base of the Rocky Mountains and look forward to exploring more of the expansive land they have adopted as their own. “I owe my family a lot for their support these last 10 months. We went to California for two weeks after graduation. That was a start.”
Looking back on humble beginnings in a Soviet-occupied country, Mohammad has a true appreciation for freedom and for the opportunities made possible by education. “Growing up I never would have imagined this life for myself, but now I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m incredibly fortunate.”
